By "parents" I don't mean that my mother gave birth to me. Undine had just barely survived giving birth to her daughter from her previous marriage, that having any children with Lucas would've risked her life. Lucas himself had lost children of his own a long time ago. Twins, named Fergus and Fiona. They both had the desire to create life, and the government had a desire for them to create synthetics.
Undine Stransky had earned five doctorates in biology, genetics, physics, mathematics, and psychology before she was 30. To say that she was intelligent would be an understatement.
When I was born, my name was Freyja. My twin was Frey.
All I remember is a light, and a man's voice asking me these words: "You are a vessel. You are born to die. Do you understand this?"
I said yes, and killed my brother. I don't know why. Perhaps I wanted to spare him from what they intended to do with us, or perhaps I had acted out in selfish outrage. Either way, I have no excuse for what I'd done. When I was born, I killed my brother. There is no excuse for that.
My only saving grace is that, unlike me, he does not remember his death.
In any case, I was killed, and then reassembled by Project Seraphim. Undine saw fit to try to "fix" me, and I was put into an isolation unit called Glass House. After a period of time, the director of the project thought me to be a threat.
Under the supervision of a government researcher, Undine was allowed to conduct regular sessions. She gave me mental exercises, made up scenarios for how I would react to certain situations ranging from social to combat oriented. Sometimes, she would take my hand and call me Fiona.
What she didn't know was the truth about Jonathan, the government researcher who had been sent to oversee the project's progress. He had taken a liking to Freyja. Not the person inside it, but the vessel itself. Don't think he was supposed to, but he frequently visited Glass House at night to say things. Share stories he had heard once of a salamander, the legendary creature that ate fire and never burned. He said that Freyja's vessel was a goddess that could eat fire as well, and spit it out to lay ruin to those who defy her.
The only thing that stood between him was Glass House. He hated that barrier a great deal. Said that he wanted it destroyed. He had great plans for that.
His visits to Glass House happened more. Somehow, he was able to enter the isolation unit, though most likely under no access approval of the project. Undine never would've allowed it. It was then that he started planting seeds in Freyja's mind. Not just with his peppered words but with he invaded her programming. He had singlehandedly both cured and worsened Freyja's madness by tampering, creating an "off" and "on" switch, so to speak, in the form of songs that Freyja had taken a liking to.
Somehow, Lucas became under the presumption that Undine's treatments were not working. Most likely as a result of Jonathan's tampering. Freyja was a lost cause, as far as Lucas was concerned, and feared for Undine's safety. He ordered for Freyja's termination, that she would be more of a threat than an asset to the war. The director approved, deciding to lend the project's focus to the development of an energy weapon they had been working on.
There was something strange about Jonathan after that. Like he knew. Undine was visibly upset. She thought to play Freyja's favorite song during the day of her termination.
